Congratulations, you are ONE in 7 BILLION.

Today marked the birthday of the “7 billionth” baby” born. While many journalists quickly typed up breaking news stories, longtime environmental advocacy group National Geographic sat back and leisurely watched the ticking population clock climb. This rising issue of population increase is no new fact for them. National Geographic has been preaching and prepping this issue for an entire year now– they made a YouTube video in 2010 highlighting what a world of 7 Billion would look like. Now that the Earth finally made it, we are forced to see how big 7 billion really is:

Throughout the past year, National Geographic has been covering a series in each of their monthly magazines titled, “7 Billion.”  Focused on the issue of a rising planet population, the twelve-month campaign zoomed in on individual issues pertaining to the capacity of the world. One issue focused on how much space seven billion people would take up, while another issue utilized research to develop the image of “most common human being.” Concluding the series, National Geographic dedicated the majority of their January magazine to encapsulate the issue at hand; from the cover headline reading “Population 7 Billion,” to a two-page foldout insert graphic, the issue gave out many detailed statistics and graphs. The focus in this issue was perhaps the most concerning one yet, as the population of the planet increases, “How will your world change?”
